Hola amigos,

Hope you are all doing well. We are still enjoying our travels but our journey is coming to an end, in less than 3 weeks we'll be in Germany. This is what we’ve been up to since we wrote last time.

After spending Christmas with Leda's family in Panama City, we flew to Kuna Yala, a chain of little island off the Panamanian Atlantic coast. This is a beautiful area, inhabited and governed by the Kunas. We stayed with the family of Bene, a good friend of Leda's.

After that we flew to Quito, Ecuador. From there we did several day trips to the mountains and visited volcanoes and lagoons. One of the highlights in Ecuador was the roof of the train from Riobamba to Alausi, through the Nariz del Diablo (devil's nose) switchbacks.

Next we visited Parque Nacional Cajas, on the Occidental Andes, at 4000m and with hundreds of lagoons. We also visited Vilcabamba, a peaceful town, famous for the longevity of its people.

Then we crossed into Peru. At the city of Trujillo we visited the ruins of Chan Chan, an impressive archeological site of a 20 square km, built entirely out of adobe. This was the former capital of the Chimu empire, and by the 15th century the largest city in the continent.

After that we visited Huascaran National Park in the Cordillera Blanca which is part of the Peruvian Andes. This mountain chain is permanently covered by snow. There we did some hiking and made sure to stay off the ice.

And then Lima. The city is huge - about 8 million people - and has many beautiful colonial buildings. The most interesting place we visited was the catacombs of the Monasterio de San Francisco, which were used as the city's burial site until the early 1800s and are said to contain the remains of up to 80,000 people.

Next we flew to Puno to join the Fiesta de la Candelaria, a huge celebration very similar to carnivals. From there we explored several islands in the Titicaca lake, including the floating islands of the Uros, which are inhabited and made entirely of totora reed.

We moved on to Cuzco and from there visited several archeological sites in the Inca's Sacred Valley. They were all very impressive. But the most amazing Inca site we saw was Machu Picchu, the lost city. The city was not destroyed by the Spaniards and was rediscovered in 1911. We had originally planned to get there by walking 40km of the Inca Trail, but it turned out to be closed at that time of the year. :(

We crossed into Bolivia, and visited Copacabana, a small town on the shore of Lake Titicaca. From there we traveled to Oruro, the mecca of the Andean carnivals. There we met a dance group from La Paz, and we had a great time hanging out with them. From there we visited La Paz, at 3700m, where they were still celebrating carnivals. There we stayed close to the Witchcraft market, an outdoor market with the most interesting merchandise for good luck and against evil spirits.

We left Bolivia through the desert of Uyuni in the southern side, 4000m above sea level. The salt planes were amazing, giant lakes of solid salt that extend for miles and miles, all you can see is white in all directions. At that time of the year some sections were covered by water, and they looked like giant mirrors. Further ahead the salt slowly changed into dirt, which created a beautiful contrast with the snow capped mountains in the background. We spent three days in the desert traveling by jeep and drove by several beautiful lagoons, which were inhabited by pink flamingos and other not so impressive birds (sounds like a mirage but it isn't!)

In Chile we visited San Pedro de Atacama, a town located in the Atacama desert, the driest place on earth. No life there, except tourists. We watched the sunset at the Valle de la Luna, an amazing moon-like landscape that is part of the Cordillera de la Sal (salt mountain chain). From there we crossed into the Northeast of Argentina, visited Salta, Cafayate and Tucuman. In Mendoza we met Ana and Juan Carlos, who were really nice to us and took us on several day trips.

Back into Chile we spent a few days in Valparaiso, a very picturesque city by the sea, full of hills and elevators. Then we moved on to Santiago, where we stayed with Denisse, who we met in Peru, and her family, who made us feel at home. Santiago big and polluted, but also very organized and efficient, with warm and friendly people.

Right now we are in Puerto Varas, in the Patagonia area. This is the low season and it’s gray and rainy here, but we’re looking forward to seeing the lakes and mountains in the area.

Hallo amigos,

wir hoffen, es geht euch gut. Wir geniessen immer noch unsere Reise, deren Ende allerdings in greifbare Nähe rückt. In etwa drei Wochen werden wir in Deutschland ankommen.

Wir haben einiges erlebt seit wir das letzte mal geschrieben haben. Nachdem wir die Weihnachtstage mit Ledas Familie in Panama verbracht haben, sind wir nach Kuna Yala geflogen, eine Inselkette von der panamanischen Atlantikküste. Die Inseln, die hauptsächlich aus Dschungel und Stränden bestehen, sind von den Kunaindianern bewohnt und verwaltet. Wir haben dort bei der Familie von Bene gewohnt, einer guten Freundin von Leda.

Anfang Januar sind wir nach Quito geflogen, der Hauptstadt von Equador. Von dort aus haben wir mehrere Tagestouren gemacht zu Vulkanen und Bergseen. Einer der Höhepunkte in Equador war die Zugfahrt von Riobamba nach Alausi. Auf dem Dach des Zuges sind wir im Zickzack die Nase des Teufels (Nariz del Diablo) runtergefahren.

Als nächstes haben wir den Cajas Nationalpark besucht, der in den westlichen Anden (4000m)liegt und hunderte kleiner Seen umfasst. Ein paar Stunden südlich davon liegt Vilcabamba, ein kleines Dorf, das berühmt ist dafür, dass seine Einwohner besonders alt werden.

Von Vilcabamba aus sind wir nach Peru gereisst. In Trujillo haben wir die Ruinen von Chan Chan besucht. Chan Chan, die ehemalige Hauptstadt der Chimu und im 15 Jahrhundert die grösste Stadt in Südamerika, erstreckte sich über 20 Quadratkilometer. Alle Gebäude waren aus ungebrannten Tonziegeln gebaut.

Von Trujillo aus ging es wieder in die Berge. Der Huascaran Nationalpark umfasst die Cordillera Blanca, eine Bergkette, die in der Peruvanischen Anden liegt und die ständig mit Schnee bedeckt ist. Wir habe ein paar Bergtouren gemacht, sind allerdings unterhalb der Schneegrenze geblieben, die bei etwa 5000m liegt.

Und dann Lima. Die Stadt ist riesig - etwa 8 Millionen Menschen. Die Innenstadt beherbergt viele alte Gebaüde aus der Kolonialzeit. Das eindrucksvollste von allen ist die Mission San Francisco. Die Katakomben unter der Missions, die bis zu Anfang des 18. Jahrhunderts als Grabstätte benutzt worden sind, enthalten die Knochen von etwa 80000 Menschen.

Als nächstes ging es nach Puno zur Fiesta de la Candelaria, eine grosse, karnevalsähniche Feier mit Umzügen und Tänzen. Von Puno aus, das direkt neben dem Titicacasee liegt, haben wir mehrere Inseln besucht. Die seltsamsten waren die schwimmenden Inseln der Uros. Die Inseln, die von mehreren Familien bewohnt sind, bestehen ganz aus Schilf.

Von Cusco aus haben wir mehrere Ruinen der Inkas besichtigt. Obwohl die meisten von ihnen sehr beeindruckend waren, hat Machu Picchu sie alle in den Schatten gestellt. Machu Picchu, die verlorene Stadt der Inkas, ist niemals von den Spaniern gefunden worden und deshalb nicht zerstört worden. Wiederentdeckt wurde sie erst 1911. Wir hatten ursprünglich geplant, den 40km langen Incatrail zu wandern bis nach Machu Picchu. Allerdings war der Wanderweg zu dem Zeitpunkt geschlossen. So haben wir halt den Zug genommen.

Nach Cusco sind wir nach Bolivien weitergereist und haben in Copacabana Station gemacht an der Ostseite des Titicacasees. Von dort aus sind wir nach Oruro wietergereisst, nach Rio de Janeiro der nächstgrösste Karneval in Südamerika. Dort haben wir eine Tanzgruppe aus La Paz getroffen, mit denen wir tüchtig gefeiert haben. Von Oruro aus sind wir nach La Paz gefahren (mit 3700 die höchste Hauptstadt der Welt), wo immer noch Karnevalfestivitäten stattfanden. Unser Hotel in La Paz war direkt neben dem Magischen Markt, einer Ansammlung von Läden und Buden, die die interesantesten Dinge verkauft haben als Glücksbringer und zur Abwehr böser Geister.

In Süden von Bolivien und mehr als 4000m über dem Meeresspiegel liegt die Uyuniwüste. Die Wüste enthält ausgetrocknete Salzseen, die sich über viele Kilometer erstrecken. Wohin man blickt, alles ist weiss. Wenn es regnet ist das Salz mit einem Wasserfilm bedeckt, und die Oberfläche verwandelt sich in einen einzigen Spiegel. Die Salzseen und die rote Wüstenlandschaft bilden einen herrlichen Kontrast zu den schneebedeckten Bergen im Hintergrund. Wir sind drei Tage mit dem Jeep durch die Wüste gafahren, die mehrere Seen enthält, die von rosa Flamigos bewohnt werden (Klingt wie eine Fata Morgana, ist aber keine!).

Von Uyuni aus sind wir nach Chile eingereist nach San Pedro de Atacama, das in der Atacamawüste liegt, der trockeste Ort der Welt. Keine Lebensspuren ausser Touristen. Wir haben den Sonnenuntergang gesehen im Tal des Mondes, eine Mondlandschaft die Teil der Cordillera de la Sal ist. Von hier aus sind wir in den Nordwesten Argentiniens gereisst und haben die Städte Salta, Cafayate, Tucuman und Mendoza besucht. In Mendoza haben wir Ana und Juan Carlos getroffen, die mehrere Tagestouren mit uns gemacht haben in ihren Peugeot 404.

Wieder in Chile, sind wir nach Valparaiso gefahren, einer Hafenstadt, die von Hügeln umgeben ist. Die Einwohner haben ende des 19 Jahrhunderts mehrere Fahrstühle errichtet, mit denen sie die Hügel hoch- und runterfahrne konnten. Als nächstes sind wir nach Santiago gefahren, wo wir mit Denisse, die wir in Peru kennengelernt hatten, und ihrer Familie gewohnt haben. Santiago ist gross und smoggy, aber auch wohlorganiziert und bewohnt von freundlichen Menschen.

Zur Zeit sind wir in Puerto Varas, das am nordöstlichen Rand der Patagonia liegt. Die Hauptsaison ist rum und es ist grau und es regnet. Wir freuen uns trotzdem schon auf die Berge und Seen.
