Grant's Strange Encounter

07/24/2003

Hey Daryl. It's been a while since I've dropped you a line. Sounds like you had quite a time in Australia. I've done quite a bit since last time a had any communication with you. I spent a bit of time on the Appalachian Trail with a friend of mine that's doing the whole thing. That was pretty neat. There are a bunch of characters out on the trail, hippies and others. That was back in June.

I've been bumming around at different beaches for a while, and have worked a bit. I've been sleeping on different beaches, kayaking, meeting all sorts of odd balls, and having a great time. I actually met a few guys that reminded me a little bit of you a few weeks ago. They were vagabond types. One had just shown up at North Carolina on a bike that he had ridden from somewhere out west. They were an interesting pair of guys. I met them on the street at Mytle Beach South Carolina when they asked me if I would like to participate in their scavenger hunt. It turned out they were doing some sort of sociology experimentation about breaking social norms or something to entertain themselves. Like I said, they were oddballs.

About the strangest encounter I've had was with a pair of drunk cops who drove out on a 4wd acessible beach called Carolina Beach with some women they were having affairs with. One of them shot his gun off into the ocean to show off. Then he tried to pick a fight with a buddy of mine. He accused him of grabbing some girl on the ass, picked him up, and threw him. After the woman he was having an affair with restrained him he drove their whole crew back home drunk. These are the people that protect our safety in America. It's scary.

Anyway, enough about that stuff, on to what this message is about. I'm going to Ecuador on August 1st. I changed my mind about Argentina because I figured it might be a bit cold now. I'm going to be there until the end of the month. If you decide to go to South America before too long, and rates to Ecuador aren't too much we ought to at least meet up for a day or too. It could be fun. It's just a proposal. I know you're doing a lot over on the other side of the Pacific. I would probably hang around on that side of the ocean a bit longer if I were you too. Like I said though, if you suddenly become inclined to leave and go to South America, I think it would be cool to meet up for a bit in Ecuador. My dad isn't staying as long as me. I think he leaves on the tenth. After Ecuador I'll be onto Spain and beyond. After I get some studying out of the way I'll probably do the backpacker thing for a bit. If you don't make it over to South America when I'm there I'm sure our paths will cross sometime. I'll keep the shipping thing going even though I'm going to be gone. I'll just have my mom do what I've been doing. I've shown her what she needs to do and all. Once I get back from Spain I'll just take the Groovy Gear stuff with me to college. I'm out of high school now, and have done a bit of college work. I'll also be doing college in Spain. Once I get back I'll officially start at some college. I'll probably go to school out in Arizona or California or something. I like the West. Anyway, I'll take whatever clothes are left with me and the Groovy Gear thing can continue on. I'm still serious about the pashmina thing too. We need to figure something out with that. I'll talk to you later. Have a good time on your travels. _ _ ______________________________________________________ _ _
