Kevin's Finished

12/1/2002

Hey Daryl, thanks, you're a legend too...

Why just the other day I was watching the Hindu's torch their dead and found myself right in with the families. I noticed they didn't have the proper sense to throw a log under a foot since that was clearly the only part with flesh still on it and it was hanging out for all to see, sort of waving goodbye. I thought to myself 'isn't this strange, boy would I love a picture. What would Daryl do?' Needless to say I snapped a shot and got the hell outta there.

Believe it or not now I'm in Vientienne to pick up a bag. I'm making my way home for Christmas. I found India (or even Nepal) didn't turn my crank after being through Tibet. It's kind of sad how Nepal commercializes Tibet. Only problem is after being in Thailand for a day I'm starting to think that all I really need is some beach time!

I wanted to give you some ideas for Cambodia since we spent some good time there. This is a mostly what I would do next time I go back. 250 dirt bike it (or Dream it) up to Ban Lung (can rent either in Strung Treng I think, or else in Ban Lung). Figure out what they have to offer around there that maybe you want to see. The minority people are real around here but I didn't make it to the big guided tour sites so I don't know what that is like. Going to the Vietnam boarder to harass the guards was worthwile although I had to backtrack the whole way (and maybe you've had enough of that:).

If you are feeling like some punnishment and have a 250, a buddy and a map (supposedly from the central market) and a compass try out one of these routes. Ban Lung south to Sen Morinson. This wasn't possible when I was there cuz it was mud everywhere. Now you should be expecting some dust. North of Siem Reap to the temples on the Thai boarder. From Battambang south through the mountains to Kang something or other (boarder town with Thailand).

Shianoukville is ok to stop by but beaches are worse than in Nah Trang. Kampot is cool for day trips to Kep and Bokor Hill. If you want, take the train from Shianoukville to Kampot and see how you like it. If it's ok then buy a hammock and ride up to Battambang from Phnom Phen in a box car.

Just some ideas, mostly from Byron Penik mag found everywhere. And my general impression of Cambodians? They're too tired of killing to kill you. Read A River of Time for some background info.

Happy travels,
