Dan's Fuck Off

02/17/2002

Darrayl,

Long time no see, sorry it took so long to email back, the telephone line has been down for the past week as a result of my dads "expand the phone system until it totally overloads and crashes" project. Stayed in Hong Kong for 2 months until I came back home, got my heart set on doing a masters out there, but then found out that the course was actually bought from a uni that is 20 miles from my house back home and costs twice the amount for 2/3 of the teaching, so therefore put two and two together and decided to fuck off back home. To be perfectly honest I did not like the place that much anyway, too conservative, too expensive, too souless, it was basically all the bad points of China without any of the good points. All the people want to do there is work 6 days a week till 10 at night and then in their spare time go shopping. And that is their life, apart from one holiday to Bejing to see the "tourist" great wall and one 7 day trip to Europe spending a few hours seeing the "sites", and the rest of the time, yep you guessed it, spent shopping. They just can`t comprehend anything different to that, and the final straw was the drinks prices, £6 (about $9) for a pint of beer, nuff said!!!

Anyway, my plan now is to earn enough money this year for the masters and do MCSE, then after masters go traveling big time. What I was thinking about doing is to get a boat to New York then buy a car and drive it over to LA (1 month), then get another boat over too Hong Kong, spend a month in China, then down to Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Burma, Tibet, Nepal, India, then boat from India past middle east to Turkey, then rail it through Europe back to London. Should take about 1.5 years in total. If you are in Europe or Northern Africa at any time, email me cause I am planning a short holiday at some point. I was thinking about going to that place you mentioned, I think it was called Daha (or something like that) in Egypt, have not been able to find it on the map though, have you got the correct spelling for it? Anyway, if you are near London you are always welcome back here at my place.

If possible could you do me a favour, I have just bought a mac powerbook off ebay, however because it is so old the battery has lost its charge, I have looked in the UK for a new one but the cheapest I can find is about $90, however there is a guy selling shit loads of them on ebay for about $10, but the catch is he only delivers to the US. This is where the favour comes in, if I got the battery sent to your house, would it be possible for you mum to send it to the UK using your normal postal service (costs about $9 via ship), I could send her a cheque or pay pal the money for postage. If she could it would save me a shit load of money.

I got my pictures developed, they came out quite good for the shit camera I had, thought I would email a couple of the Mongolian ones too you for old times sake. What was India like, costs, atmosphere, things to do? How easy/expensive was it to do the Tibet to Dehli bit. What are your plans now? Anyway I will speak to you again soon...

See ya later,
